Word Desktop Only Shows 7-8 Pages While Word Online Displays Full 24-Page Document

Hello,

I'm experiencing an issue with Microsoft Word Desktop and would like to know if this is a known bug or if there is a workaround.

Problem

Several Word documents that should contain approximately 24 pages only display 7-8 pages in the Word Desktop application. However, when the same documents are opened in Word Online (Word for the Web), all content is displayed correctly.

Observations

  • The Navigation Pane still shows all document headings.
  • The missing sections are associated with existing headings that remain visible in the Navigation Pane.
  • "Expand All Headings" does not restore the missing content.
  • Converting the file to .doc temporarily helped for some users, but this workaround no longer works consistently.
  • Downloading the document from Word Online results in a file that again only displays 7-8 pages in Word Desktop.
  • The issue occurs with multiple documents, not just a single file.
  • The documents open correctly in Word Online.

Troubleshooting already performed

  • Updated Microsoft 365 to the latest version.
  • Performed Quick Repair and Online Repair.
  • Reinstalled Microsoft 365 completely.
  • Checked for hidden text and collapsed headings.
  • Tested different document copies and file names.
  • The issue persists after all of the above.

Environment

  • Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise (latest version)
  • Word Desktop (latest build)
  • Word Online displays the documents correctly

Questions

  1. Is this a known issue with a recent Microsoft 365 Word build?
  2. Are there any known rendering or compatibility issues where Word Online displays content correctly but Word Desktop hides it?
  3. Are there specific settings, document structures, or features that could cause headings to appear in the Navigation Pane while the corresponding content is not rendered in Word Desktop?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Hey, thank you for all of your help! It seems like time (or probably a Windows update) fixed the problem. The templates that had missing pages are working again after the weekend for all users without changing anything.

Hello, you mentioned "Checked for hidden text and collapsed headings.". You are referring to the formatting option, right? If a piece of text uses that option, it should behave the way you described, or so it seems to me.

    Hello Enzi Oliver,

Thank you for providing such a detailed description and for completing the extensive troubleshooting steps already mentioned. I appreciate the time you have spent updating, repairing, and reinstalling Microsoft 365, as well as testing multiple document copies.

At present, I have not received or observed any official Microsoft information confirming this behavior as a known issue in the latest Word build.

To help narrow down whether the issue follows the document or is specific to the Word Desktop environment, please try the following additional tests:

    1. Open the affected document in SharePoint or OneDrive, download it directly to a local folder on your computer, and then open the downloaded copy in Word Desktop.
    2. Attach the affected document to an email in Outlook and send it to yourself or ask a colleague to send it to you as an attachment. Download the received attachment, save it locally, and check whether Word Desktop displays the full 24-page document.
    3. Open Word in Safe Mode:
    • Press Windows + R.
    • Enter winword /safe.
    • Select OK and then open the affected document.
    1. If possible, open the same downloaded file in Word Desktop on another device. Please also ask a colleague to test the file using their Word Desktop application and confirm whether all pages are visible.

If the document still displays only 7–8 pages after all these tests, please ask your organization’s IT administrator to open a support ticket with Microsoft. A support engineer can collect the affected document through a secure channel, review the Word build and diagnostic information, and investigate the behavior further using support tools that are not available through the Community forum.

Your IT administrator can create a support request by following this guide: Get support - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn

When submitting the ticket, it would be helpful to include the affected document, screenshots comparing Word Desktop and Word for the web, the exact Word version and build, and the results of the tests above.

    Kind regards,
