OneNote Data Loss and Missing Pages After Sync Issue

Hello Microsoft Support,

I am experiencing a serious issue with OneNote and I need your assistance.

A few days ago, I was unable to sign in normally to my Microsoft account. My password was not accepted, and I had to verify my account using a code sent to my email address.

After regaining access, I discovered that a large amount of my OneNote data was missing.

The notebooks and sections are still visible, but many pages have disappeared. Some pages are completely missing, while others have lost part of their content. In the "Recent Pages" section, I can still see references to some of the missing pages, but when I try to open them, OneNote displays the message:

"Can't open the page. This page may have been moved or deleted, or you may not have permission to access it."

Approximately three months of important notes, research, and work have been affected.

I am using OneNote on Android and I would like to know:

Whether my missing pages can be recovered.

Whether previous versions of my notebooks still exist on Microsoft's servers.

Whether there is any way to restore my account to a state before this synchronization issue occurred.

This data is extremely important to me and I would appreciate any assistance in recovering it.

Thank you.

I can provide screenshots of the affected notebooks, recent pages list, and error messages if required.

    Hello Xavier,

Thank you for your response and for following up on this issue.

However, I am genuinely disappointed by how long it takes to receive a response. Each time, I have to wait several days, and during this period I remain unable to access my important notes. Unfortunately, valuable time is being lost while this issue remains unresolved.

I would also like to emphasize that I carefully reviewed and followed the steps and suggestions provided in your previous response. Unfortunately, none of those recommendations helped me recover my notes, make the missing pages visible again, or resolve the problem.

I would like to reiterate that my deleted notes are still visible in the Recent Notes section. Their presence there suggests that the data may still exist somewhere and could potentially be recoverable. However, whenever I try to open any of these notes, I receive the error message shown in the attached screenshot, stating that the page may have been moved, deleted, or that I do not have sufficient permission to access it. As a result, I am unable to view or recover the content of these notes.

Could you please advise me on the most appropriate next step? Should I uninstall OneNote and reinstall it from Google Play? Would signing out of my Microsoft account, signing in again, and performing a fresh synchronization be helpful? I am concerned that taking such actions without proper guidance could reduce the chances of recovering my notes.

If additional screenshots, logs, or information are required, I would be happy to provide them.

I sincerely appreciate your continued assistance and would be grateful for a more specific recovery procedure or any action that Microsoft can take to help restore my notes.

Thank you for your time and support. I look forward to your response as soon as possible.

    Kind regards,

    Hello javad

I’m sorry that so much important OneNote content is missing.

Since the notebooks and sections are still visible, this may be a synchronization issue rather than permanent deletion.

Before continuing, do not uninstall OneNote, clear its app data, reset it, or sign out again, as unsynced notes may still be stored locally on your device.

    Please try these steps:

    1. Sign in to https://www.onenote.com/ with the same personal Microsoft account and check whether the missing pages appear there. This helps determine whether the issue is with the app or the cloud copy.
    2. In OneNote for Android, check More Notebooks > View Sync Errors and look for Misplaced Sections. If pages are there, press and hold a page, select Copy Page, and copy it to a new section. Do not close Misplaced Sections until everything important is recovered.
    3. In OneNote for the web, check View > Deleted Notes. If available, restore the affected pages with Move or Copy.
    4. If you have access to OneNote on Windows, right-click an affected page and check Page Versions. Android does not provide page-version or local-backup recovery.
    5. Check the OneDrive Recycle Bin. Microsoft 365 subscribers may also be able to restore OneDrive to an earlier time within the available recovery period.

I hope one of these recovery locations still contains the missing notes.

Feel free reply back to this post and update me on this issue, I'll be happy to help.
