    Try these checks in order:

    1. Unlock Microsoft Authenticator on the phone. If the app is locked, the sign-in prompt or number entry box might not appear.
    2. Enable notifications for Microsoft Authenticator. Silent or disabled notifications can prevent approval prompts from appearing. Also check text messages in case an authentication code arrived silently.
    3. Update Microsoft Authenticator. Older app versions can fail authentication. Microsoft does not support app versions more than 12 months old.
    4. Check the network connection. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and make sure Airplane mode is off. If a VPN is enabled, disconnect it and test again.
    5. Check phone settings. Make sure:
      • Date and time are correct
      • Battery optimization is turned off for Authenticator
      • The device OS is up to date
      • Other security apps such as Microsoft Defender or Intune Company Portal are also up to date
    6. If notifications do not appear when the app is closed:
      • Make sure the phone is not in Do Not Disturb or Quiet mode
      • Confirm the app is allowed to use sound or vibration for notifications
      • If some accounts notify and one does not, remove that account from Authenticator and add it again, allowing notifications
    7. If the message says authentication did not complete: Common causes are:
      • App locked
      • Notifications disabled
      • Outdated app
      • Network issue
      • Incorrect date/time
    8. If sign-in still cannot be completed:
      • For a personal account, try the password reset option if the password is the issue
      • For a work or school account, contact the IT admin

If the problem is specifically that no prompt appears, manually open the Authenticator app during sign-in and check whether the approval request is waiting inside the app.
