WHEN I OPEN A FOLDER ON LEFT THE FOLDER ICON OPENS NOT THE PICTURES

It sounds like you may be clicking the > arrow next to the folder. That arrow only expands the folder in the navigation pane. Please click the folder name itself to display its contents in the right pane.

And, in the folder options section, ensure these options are unticked.

• Expand to open folder.
• Show all folders.
