I can’t get into my school email because I can’t get a code from the authenticator app and I can’t get into the app without the code.

    Hi @Morgan Colbert,

When you try to sign in, do you see a "Sign in another way" option?

If you do, please select it and check whether you have another verification method available, such as a text message, phone call, security key, or another previously registered authentication method. If one of those options is available, you may be able to regain access immediately.

If you don't see any alternative sign-in methods, then the best course of action is to contact your school IT administrators.

You can kindly ask them to follow the steps in this guide to revoke your existing MFA sessions and require re-registration: Manage authentication methods for Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication - Microsoft Entra ID |…

This process usually takes only a few minutes. It clears the existing MFA registration and sessions, and the next time you sign in, you'll be prompted to set up Microsoft Authenticator again from scratch on your phone. In many cases, this resolves the issue and allows the app to function normally again.

As this is a user-to-user support forum, I can only offer steps based on my experience and how similar cases are typically resolved, rather than making direct changes. In your case, the account is entirely managed by your school, and only those with the appropriate administrative permissions can modify its security settings.

I sincerely hope this points you in the right direction and helps you regain access to your account as quickly as possible so you can continue your studies without further interruption.

Thank you for your time and understanding, and I wish you the very best with resolving this issue.

For a school account, this usually means only Microsoft Authenticator is registered as the sign-in method, so no other option appears.

    Try these steps:

    1. On the sign-in screen, look for Sign in with another method or a similar option.
      • If another method was previously set up, use that instead.
      • If no other method appears, only Authenticator is configured for the account.
    2. If the Authenticator app is installed but not completing sign-in:
      • Make sure the app is unlocked.
      • Make sure notifications are enabled and not silent.
      • Check whether a code arrived silently by text.
      • Update to the latest version of Microsoft Authenticator.
      • Check the phone’s internet connection and try switching between Wi‑Fi and mobile data.
      • Verify the device date and time are correct.
    3. If repeated sign-in attempts were made, stop retrying for now.
      • Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication can temporarily block additional attempts after unusual or repeated sign-ins.
      • Wait and try again later, or use a different MFA method if one is available.
    4. If the app was never set up on a device that still has access, or there is no alternate method, contact the school or university IT Help Desk.
      • Ask them to clear or reset MFA settings so the account can be registered again.
      • After they clear the settings, the next sign-in should prompt for a new two-factor verification setup.
    5. If a phone used for Authenticator was lost or stolen, also tell the Help Desk.
      • They can clear the old settings and prompt re-registration at the next sign-in.

Microsoft support agents are not allowed to send verification codes or change work or school account details.
