I have a current Microsoft 365 account and have downloaded a word document. Upon opening the document it asks me to activate my Microsoft Word account to make changes to the document. But when I click the 'activate' button and log in to my account it says either an error or cannot link account to activation key.

    Andrew,

Any chance you are using this on macOS? If so, what is your macOS version?

Is your office product purchased from Microsoft or from Apple?

Hi Andrew Moseley and GOH MOSES,

If you're using macOS, it appears that you are experiencing a known issue that prevents Office from opening. The good news is that the issue has been resolved. Please refer to the following article for the recommended fix steps: Unknown Error 0x0 or License not found error in Microsoft 365 or Office running on macOS.

One important requirement to note is that your Mac must be running macOS 12 (Monterey) or later. If you are using an earlier version of macOS, please update the operating system first; otherwise, the fix may not work as expected.

You can also find additional information and community feedback in this discussion thread: 0x0 Error After Mac Update July 14th, 2026 - Microsoft Q&A.

If the problem persists, please help us confirm the following:

    1. When you sign in to https://account.microsoft.com/services, do you see an active Microsoft 365 Personal subscription listed under the account used to make the purchase?
    2. Was the renewal purchased using the same Microsoft account currently signed in to Office applications?
    3. What exact message do you receive when opening an Office application?
    4. What is your operating system and version?
    5. Have you already tried signing out of all Office applications and signing back in with the account associated with the subscription? If yes, what was the result?

With those details, we'll be able to troubleshoot the activation issue more accurately.

My Mac is already running on MasOS Tahoe 26.6. Is there any later version that can help me access Microsoft 365?
