Graphics card stopped working after Intel Corporation driver update for Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000

My computer automatically updated a graphics driver; Intel Corporation driver update for Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000.

After that, my GPU failed to work, it became hidden in the Device Manager. HDMI failed to recognise a signal.

  1. Checked all cables, they are working.
  2. tried to 'Scan for hardware changes' and 'Show hidden devices' in Device Manager. my NVIDIA graphics card was showing as a faded out icon after this. I used 'Display Driver Uninstaller' to uninstall any NVIDIA drivers in SAFE MODE. Rebooted and attempted to install new graphics driver directly from NVIDIA website.
  3. NVIDIA driver failed to install as it said it could not detect an NVIDIA GPU. Now the GPU is not showing at all in Device Manager.
  4. Tried rebooting in Safe Mode, tried checking BIOS, having no luck. Please help me because i'm very angry that your update has disabled my graphics card.

    Hi Geraldine Willis

I understand your frustration. However, a driver update alone is unlikely to physically damage a GPU. Since the NVIDIA card first appeared as a hidden/faded device and is now no longer detected, the priority is to determine whether Windows, BIOS, or the hardware can still see the card.

A few things I would check next:

    1. Open Device Manager > View > Show hidden devices and also check for any Unknown devices. Then select Action > Scan for hardware changes.
    2. Check Windows Update > Optional Updates for any available display driver updates.
    3. In BIOS/UEFI, verify that the PCIe/discrete GPU is enabled and that integrated graphics is not forcing the system to ignore the NVIDIA card.
    4. If this is a desktop PC, power off, unplug it, and reseat the graphics card and its PCIe power connectors. A loose connection can cause the GPU to disappear completely from Device Manager.
    5. If the issue started immediately after the Intel driver update, try System Restore or rolling back to a restore point created before the update.

If the NVIDIA GPU does not appear in BIOS, Device Manager, or NVIDIA's installer, even after reseating the card, that may indicate a hardware problem rather than a driver issue.

To help narrow this down, is this a desktop or laptop, and what is the exact NVIDIA GPU model?

Feel free to update here if anything comes up!
