Go to Word> Preferences - View then check the box for Drawings.

If that isn't the solution please provide as much additional detail as possible including Office & macOS Version Numbers.

Another possibility is that you have switched to a different View. Graphic objects do not display in Outline View or Draft View. Go to the View menu or the View tab & select Print Layout View.

    Hi!

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Can you help me with few questions that will help narrow down what is happening.

Does this happen with every document or only one specific document?

Are the pictures completely invisible (blank space), or do you just see empty boxes/placeholders?

Also, can you do a test by creating a new blank Word document and insert a new picture. If it displays normally, the issue may be specific to the original document.
