Yep - but with some limitations. Microsoft 365 Copilot can review the contents of an Excel workbook, identify formulas, compare values, summarize differences, and help check whether a student's work appears correct. It can also explain errors and suggest corrections.

However, Copilot is not a dedicated grading tool. It does not automatically compare every submission against an answer key or assign reliable scores across many student spreadsheets. For consistent grading, you would typically use Excel formulas, conditional formatting, VBA, Office Scripts, or Power Automate alongside Copilot.

If you have a small number of assignments, Copilot can help review each workbook and identify mistakes. If you need to grade dozens or hundreds of spreadsheets automatically, a purpose-built grading solution or custom automation is a better choice.

I was wondering if other professors have tried this. I have access to Copilot Basic Chat but it does not have direct access to the actual excel files that I have uploaded, only some type of summary information. So, it could grade some of the rubric items. It seems to think that an upgraded version of Copilot could do this. Just looking to see if other professors have had more success with this.

I would be cautious about using Copilot as the primary grader for Excel assignments. Even with a version that can directly access the workbook, there is still a risk of hallucinations, where it may incorrectly interpret formulas, overlook important details, or provide inaccurate evaluations. A grading mistake caused by an AI tool could negatively affect your credibility and your relationship with students.

Human reasoning is especially important when grading because assignments often involve judgment calls: understanding intent, recognizing alternative approaches, considering partial credit, and evaluating whether a student demonstrated the required concepts. These are areas where an instructor’s experience and context are far more valuable than an automated agent.

I would consider using Copilot as a grading assistant rather than a grader. It can help identify potential issues, summarize student work, or help draft feedback, but the final evaluation should remain your decision.
