Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Hi, chris callachan
This message usually means the subscription was purchased successfully, but Office is being activated with a different Microsoft account. On a Mac, it can also happen when an App Store purchase cannot be matched with the Apple ID or was previously linked to another Microsoft account.
Here are some suggestions you can try:
Sign in to Microsoft Services & subscriptions using the email address used for the purchase. Confirm that Microsoft 365 appears there. If it does not, check any other personal Microsoft accounts you may have.
Sign out of every account in Word or Excel, close all Office apps, reopen one, and sign in with the account showing the subscription.
If you purchased through Apple, confirm the subscription is active under your Apple ID. Then open the same Office app used for the purchase and select Restore previous purchase.
If activation still fails, uninstall and reinstall the Office apps. This resolved the same error in a recent forum case.
If none of these works, contact Microsoft Support with the purchase receipt.
