This usually happens when Office is not recognizing the active subscription, or when the file itself is opening in a restricted mode.

    Try these checks in order:

    1. Check whether Office is activated.
      • If Word or Excel shows Unlicensed Product or an activation error, editing can be limited and files may open read-only.
    2. Check whether the file is marked read-only.
      • In File Explorer, right-click the file, select Properties, and clear the Read-only attribute if it is selected.
    3. Check whether the file opened in Protected View.
      • Files from email, the internet, or other potentially unsafe locations can open in Protected View, which allows viewing but limits editing.
    4. If the document is in Word, check Word’s open mode.
      • In Word, go to File > Info > Protect document.
      • If Always Open Read-Only is enabled, clear it.
      • If the upper-right mode menu shows Viewing or Reviewing, switch it to Editing.
    5. If the file is stored in OneDrive, check storage.
      • If OneDrive storage is full, the document cannot be saved until storage is available.
    6. If this affects Excel files that may be locked, close the file on all devices and wait a few minutes.
      • A file can appear read-only if it is still locked by another session or by a previous session that did not close correctly.
    7. If none of the above fixes it:
      • Restart the computer.
      • Install Office updates.
      • Perform an Online Repair of Office.
