One Drive for Business/Support - University Account Locked - Need Recovery of Cloud files

I am requesting this support for my school outlook account. My school account has been disabled following the end of my one year student access. This is an unfortunate situation because I thought these files had been synced locally on my laptop but they did not.

The folders still remain visible on my Windows PC, because I am still linked to school one drive but the files cannot be downloaded because I have lost my student access and it says my university account has been locked. I have reached out to the IT department of the university to help retrieve this document from their back end, but they are not forthcoming and claimed I can no longer access and the data has been released. How can you help me to check the status of this one drive and if the one drive data has actually been released from the the school icloud. I need to determine whether the OneDrive data still exists and what actions my university’s Microsoft 365 administrator can take to recover/export the files. The university help desk has so far been unable to assist me.

Hello Oluwasola,

Thank you for reaching out, and I'm sorry to hear about this situation. I understand how concerning it can be to discover that important files were not fully synchronized locally before your university account was disabled.

Based on the information you provided, it appears that your university has already disabled or removed access to your Microsoft 365 student account. Unfortunately, Microsoft Support does not have direct access to a university's Microsoft 365 tenant or OneDrive environment, so only your institution's Microsoft 365 administrators can verify the current status of your OneDrive data and determine whether recovery is still possible.

In this case, I would recommend asking the university to provide a definitive confirmation of:

  • The date your account was deleted (if applicable).
  • The OneDrive retention policy configured for former students.

This information is important because the ability to recover the data depends on the university's OneDrive retention policy. Deleted OneDrive accounts can be retained for 30 to 93 days, and during that period Microsoft 365 administrators may still be able to restore or recover the data if the OneDrive has not been permanently removed.

For reference: Restore a deleted OneDrive - SharePoint in Microsoft 365 | Microsoft Learn

However, if the OneDrive has already completed the school's retention period and deletion lifecycle, the files may unfortunately no longer be recoverable.

I hope this information helps clarify the situation. Please feel free to reach out if you need further assistance.
