Registering a surface pro slim pen warranty

I recently bought a new Microsoft surface pro 13" keyboard with slim pen (alcantara) as my old one stopped working and want to register the pen on my Microsoft account for the warranty. I have managed to register the new keyboard on my microsoft account and it is under warranty for a year but when I try to to register the pen via serial number it says serial number not recognised.

I don't have an issue with the pen but want it registered on my account for the warranty.

If there is any help that can be provided I would be grateful.

Thanks.

    Hi charlotte morrish,

I understand how confusing this can be when your newly purchased Surface Slim Pen cannot be registered, especially when the keyboard registers successfully. However, this behavior is usually expected, as Surface Slim Pen or other Surface accessories (except Surface keyboards/Type Covers) could not be registered as a standalone.

Just wondering, did you purchase the Surface Pro Keyboard and Slim Pen as a bundle, or were they purchased separately? If it's the former and the keyboard is already registered, just save your proof of purchase or invoice for the bundle for future. When you ever need service for the Slim Pen, use the registered Surface device/accessory service process.

If it's the latter case, you would need to contact Microsoft Support directly (for example: When requesting a repair for the surface type cover and pen, there is no option to choose it, inste…). Provide them the proof of purchase for your Slim Pen and they will help you figure out what's the best option next:

    1. Visit Contact Us - Microsoft Support > Sign in
    2. Type in your problem > click Get Help to make request
    3. Scroll to the bottom and click Contact Support to connect to agent
    4. Select category again > continue and you should be added to a chat queue.
    5. If you don't see the chat option, go through another category and request escalate.

Note: The support contact team only works at certain times, so if the last window shows that it's unavailable, try opening it again the next day. If you prefer phone support, you can leave a phone number. This way, they can call you and help you.

Hopefully this helps clarify the situation. If you would like additional reassurance that the pen is covered, you can also contact Support right now for more suggestions.

Surface Pen warranty service is handled through the associated Surface device rather than by registering the pen separately with its serial number.

    What to do:

    1. Sign in to Microsoft account | Devices at https://account.microsoft.com/devices.
    2. If the Surface device the pen is used with is not listed, select Register device and register the Surface first.
    3. Select the registered Surface device.
    4. Follow the service flow and, when asked for the issue category, select Accessory and then choose a Pen issue type.
    5. Replacement or service options are then shown based on warranty status and exchange eligibility.

    To check warranty coverage:

    • In the Surface app, open Warranty & services.
    • Or in Microsoft account | Devices, select the device and check Info & support / Device coverage.

If the pen ever needs service and the warranty has expired, a new pen or replacement pen tips can be purchased from the Microsoft Store. For Surface Slim Pen 2, the tip is removable only for tip replacement. Excessive removal and reinsertion of the tip can damage the pen and is not covered under warranty.

If this is an organization-owned Surface, use the business Surface service options instead of the consumer account flow.
