Hi Ray Chaplin,
I understand how inconvenient it can be when File Explorer search results are displayed horizontally instead of in the layout you prefer.
To help narrow this down, could you please confirm the following?
- Are you searching directly in File Explorer or using the Windows Search box on the taskbar?
- After performing a search, what is currently selected under View: List, Details, Tiles, Content or an icon view?
- Does this happen with every File Explorer search or only when searching in a specific folder or drive?
- If possible, please share a screenshot of the actual search results layout. Make sure to hide any personal file names or other sensitive information first.
In the meantime, please try these steps:
- Perform a search in File Explorer.
- Select View on the toolbar.
- Choose Details or List and check whether the results are displayed vertically as expected.
- If the layout does not change, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, find Windows Explorer, right-click it, and select Restart.
- You can also open File Explorer, select the three-dot menu (See more) > Options > View, then select Reset Folders and Restore Defaults.
- Finally, check Settings > Windows Update and install any available updates, then restart the device.
While my initial response may not fully resolve the issue, I truly appreciate your cooperation as we work together toward identifying the most effective solution. Thank you so much for your understanding.
