What do I do if I would like to leave the insiders programme? I do not need it, nor do I want it. It was installed by mistake

There are two ways to stop receiving Insider builds, depending on what outcome you want:

Stay on your current Insider build and wait for retail to catch up

You can unenroll the device in Settings. This stops future Insider builds only when the public release becomes equal to or newer than the build you’re currently running.

Until that happens, you remain on your Insider build.

Go straight back to the public release immediately

You can delete the WindowsSelfHost registry key to remove Insider enrollment instantly, but this does not downgrade your OS.

To return to retail right away, you must install a public release ISO.

I am struggling to un enroll from Insiders.

As told by other replies you can select that Unenroll option and wait untill 26300 (26H2) is released to public and then your device will get out of insider program without reinstall.

Only cases when you have to do clean install are:

You want to get out of insider program and you have any 28xxx or 29xxx builds installed

If you want to leave insider program immediately.

No matter are you insider or not you should always have up to date backup of all inportant files you don't want to loose in case of serious hardware or software failure.

When did you install Insider, if you installed within 10 days you can roll back, if its longer than 10 days then only the other options apply.

Hi nikki tester,

If you joined the Windows Insider Program by mistake and would like to leave it, you can usually do so from Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program.

Under "Stop getting preview builds*"*, look for the option to "Unenroll this device when the next version of Windows releases" and turn it on. This will stop your device from receiving future Insider builds and return it to the public release channel when the corresponding stable version becomes available.

I would also recommend checking which Insider channel your device is currently enrolled in. You can find this under Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program.

If you're on the Beta or Release Preview channel, you can usually leave the program without reinstalling Windows.
If you're on the Dev or Canary channel, returning immediately to a stable public version may require reinstalling Windows because those builds can be ahead of the public release.

Since Dev Channel builds are often ahead of the current public release, returning to a stable version of Windows typically requires a clean installation. Windows does not generally support downgrading from a newer Dev Channel build to an older public release while keeping apps and settings.

Before proceeding, please ensure that you backup any important data, including Documents, Pictures, Videos, and more. You can then follow Microsoft's guide to perform a clean installation of Windows 11: Windows 11 Clean Installation

After Windows has been reinstalled and setup is complete, the device will be back on a public release version of Windows and no longer receiving Dev Channel builds.

What happens if I do nothing? I am too scared to do anything to my computer as I will possibly lose everything. I am not that tech savvy and honestly don't recall even installing it on my computer. I know I must have, but I probably thought it was some kind of rewards programme. Forgive me I am 71 and think Ihave made a serious error of judgement

Thank you for your response, and please don't be too hard on yourself. You're certainly not the only person who has enrolled in the Windows Insider Program without realizing exactly what it was, and it does not mean you've damaged your computer.

If you do nothing right now, your PC should continue to work normally and will continue receiving Windows Insider Dev Channel updates. There is no requirement to immediately perform a clean installation unless you want to leave the Insider Program and return to the standard public release of Windows.

The main consideration is that Dev Channel builds are test versions of Windows. They can sometimes contain bugs, unfinished features, or unexpected issues that are not present in the public release. If your computer is currently working well and you're uncomfortable making major changes, there is no need to rush into anything.
