My authenicator app keeps creating 8 digit codes instead of 6 digit codes

Question

I have an authenticator app. it generates codes for my accounts. I lost my phone recently and had to buy a new one. since then it has only been making 8 digit codes instead of 6 digit codes. I have tried everything from going through what is suggested i work through on the is forum a turning on and off password etc. nothing works. the functional result is i am currently block out of all my account and money.

Can you please make it so it will generate 6 digit codes again. Why has it changed at all? I completely don't understand why it would do this. All the sites I used require 6 digit codes why is is making 8 digit codes.
