Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Your Office apps can become read-only when the subscription expires, has a payment problem, or the apps are signed in with an account that does not own the subscription. Your files are normally still available, but editing requires an active license.
Here are some suggestions you can try:
If you purchased directly from Microsoft, sign in to Services & subscriptions using the Microsoft account originally used for the purchase. Check whether Microsoft 365 appears as Active, Expired, Past due, or under Canceled subscriptions. If it is expired or canceled, select Renew. If it is past due, update the payment method and select Pay now.
If the subscription is missing, try any other Microsoft account you may have used. A missing subscription usually means the current account is not the one linked to the purchase.
If you purchased through Apple, open Settings > your name > Subscriptions on your iPhone or iPad. If Microsoft 365 is active there, open the Microsoft 365 app and use Restore previous purchase.
Once the subscription is active, close all Office apps, reopen one, and sign in with the same licensed account. Select Reactivate if prompted.
