The 10/1/2026 change applies to Microsoft Publisher, not Word documents.
If the files are Word documents, no special conversion is required just because of that date.
If some files are actually Publisher files, convert them before 10/1/2026:
- Open the Publisher file.
- Go to File > Save As.
- Choose where to save it.
- Select PDF as the file type, then select Save.
If the goal is to keep editing the content after Publisher support ends:
- Convert the Publisher file to PDF.
- Open Word.
- Go to File > Open.
- Open the PDF file.
- Select OK in the dialog box.
- The file opens as a Word document.
Important: the converted Word file is optimized for text editing, so the layout can differ from the original, especially if the file contains many graphics.
If there are older Word files in .doc format and the goal is to update them to a newer Word format:
- Open the document in Word.
- Go to File > Save As > Browse.
- In Save as type, choose Word Document (*.docx).
- Select Save.
- Close and reopen the new .docx file.
Before converting older Word files, keep a backup copy and verify the content and layout after conversion.
