Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Dear @Ram Narayan,
I understand how critical it is to regain access to your admin account after losing your login credentials and Authenticator setup.
Because admin accounts hold top-level tenant security permissions, the recovery path depends entirely on whether there is another administrator in your organization or if you are the sole administrator.
Scenario 1: If There Is Another Admin in Your Organization
If your tenant has another Global Administrator or User Administrator, they can resolve this for you immediately:
- Ask the other administrator to log in to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center.
- Go to Users > Active users and select your account.
- Click Reset password to generate a temporary password for you.
- Go to Manage authentication methods under your user profile and select Require re-register MFA. This clears your old Authenticator instance so you can set up your phone again upon next sign-in.
Please refer to this document: Manage user authentication methods for Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication
Scenario 2: If You Are the Only Admin (Sole Administrator)
If no other administrator exists to reset your credentials, forum community members and general support agents cannot modify account details due to strict privacy and compliance policies. You must contact the backend security team directly:
- Locate the official customer service contact for your region via Microsoft Customer Service Phone Numbers
- When prompted by the automated IVR phone system, state clearly: "Admin lockout - need Data Protection Team."
- The automated system will open a ticket and route you to the Data Protection Team. They will perform an identity verification process to confirm domain/subscription ownership and reset your authentication settings from the backend.
If calling phone support hasn’t been effective and you’re getting disconnected, there is another option you can consider as a workaround to reach the right team. You can sign up for a new Microsoft 365 tenant by creating a trial subscription here: Microsoft 365 Business Plans and Pricing | Microsoft 365
Once that new tenant is created, you’ll be able to access the Microsoft 365 admin center and submit a support ticket directly from there. In the ticket, explain that you’re requesting assistance from the Data Protection Team for your original tenant, due to being locked out as the only admin with MFA issues. This method often helps bypass the automated loops because you’re able to submit the request from an authenticated admin center, even if it’s under a temporary tenant.
Note: Please remember to cancel the trial subscription once your issue is resolved to avoid any unintended charges.
Please let me know if you need help finding the support contact details for your specific country.
