Windows taskbar search: Bing search results page briefly displayed, then redirected to Bing.com

If I open a result from the taskbar search in Bing, it briefly shows the search results page for a second and then redirects me to the bing.com homepage, meaning I have to click the back button to return to the results.

I understand how inconvenient it is when the Bing results appear correctly for a moment, only to redirect to the Bing homepage and require you to go back each time.

To help narrow this down, could you please confirm:

Does this happen only when starting a web search from the Windows taskbar, or also when searching directly on Bing.com in Edge?
Does the same behavior occur in an Edge InPrivate window?
Does it affect every search query or only certain ones?
Are you using any extensions that manage the new tab page, search, privacy or ad blocking?

In the meantime, please try the following:

Open Edge and go to Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Delete browsing data, then clear the cached images, files, and cookies related to Bing.
Temporarily disable all Edge extensions from edge://extensions, restart Edge, and test the taskbar search again.
Open Settings > About Microsoft Edge and allow Edge to install any available updates.
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, find Windows Explorer, right-click it, and select Restart.
Test the same search in an Edge InPrivate window by pressing Ctrl + Shift + N.

Hi @Vikki-T

The redirection only happens when searching from the taskbar. It affects every query.

My only extensions are a printing extension and Microsoft Editor. I also have an antivirus one but it was apparently not turned on.

I will post another comment when I have tried your suggestions.

I disabled the extensions, checked for an update and installed it, and restarted Windows Explorer. No change. Due to account settings I cannot test it with a private window.

Thank you for trying those steps and sharing the results. Since the redirection affects every query but occurs only when the search is started from the Windows taskbar and disabling the extensions made no difference, this appears to be more specific to the interaction between Windows Search and Bing rather than a particular Edge extension.

It is completely fine that your account settings do not allow InPrivate browsing. Please try the following next:

In Edge, open edge://settings/content/all, search for bing.com and delete the stored site data for Bing. Then restart Edge and test the taskbar search again.

Repair Microsoft Edge by going to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Edge > Modify > Repair. This should not remove your browser data or settings.

Run the Windows Search troubleshooter from Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, then run Search and Indexing.

Check Settings > Windows Update and install any pending Windows updates, then restart the device.

If the behavior continues after these steps, please report it through Feedback Hub under Desktop Environment > Search, and use Recreate my problem to record the redirection as it happens. This will provide the Windows team with diagnostic information that cannot be collected through the forum.

Please let me know whether clearing the Bing site data or repairing Edge changes the behavior.
