Try these steps in order:

1. Update Office
   • Open any Office app if possible.
   • Go to File > Account.
   • Under Product Information, select Update Options > Update Now.
   • If Update Now is not shown, select Enable Updates first.
2. Start the app in Safe Mode to check whether an add-in is causing the crash.
   • Press Windows key + R to open Run.
   • Use one of these commands:
     • excel /safe
     • winword /safe
     • powerpnt /safe
   • Make sure there is a space before /safe.
   • If Safe Mode opens, the title bar will show (Safe Mode).
3. If the app opens in Safe Mode, disable add-ins
   • In the app, go to File > Options > Add-Ins.
   • In the Manage list, select the app add-ins type if available, or select COM Add-ins, then select Go.
   • Clear one add-in, select OK, and test again.
   • Repeat one at a time until the problem stops.
   • Older add-ins known to cause problems include Abbyy FineReader, PowerWord, and Dragon Naturally Speaking.
4. If the app does not open in Safe Mode
   • Repair Office, or uninstall and reinstall it.
   • If the issue continues after that, make sure the PC has the latest device drivers installed.
5. If this is the first run of a preinstalled Office 2016 app and the “Let’s get started” screen was closed immediately
   • Close the Office app and start it again. This is a temporary issue.
