Windows is suddenly deactivated after update 25H2

I've been using this PC for 2 years now, my windows was activated the whole time. But after the update was installed I suddenly got the "Activate Windows" watermark. I do not have access to my windows key, I was however able to retrieve backup PID from regedit, but it did not work. Right now I am getting the error code 0xc004F213. Troubleshooting does not work, it gives the result "we were not able to activate windows on this device." "I changed hardware on this device recently" option does not work either.

The key you found in registry is not the actual license key. It cannot be used for activation.

Can you please type cmd in the search on the taskbar and hit enter to launch command prompt, then run the following command:

slmgr /dlv

Error 0xC004F213 means Windows cannot find a product key on the device. A Windows license is associated with the device hardware, and activation can fail after a significant hardware-related change or when Windows cannot match the device to its license.

Given that:

• Troubleshoot did not reactivate Windows
• I changed hardware on this device recently also failed
• the backup PID from Registry did not work

use this path:

1. Open Start > Settings > System > Activation.
2. If there is a valid product key that was previously used on this device, select Change product key and enter that key.
3. If the device had a digital license linked to a Microsoft account before the issue started, select Troubleshoot. If available, use the reactivation path for hardware change and sign in with the same Microsoft account that was linked to the digital license.
4. If Windows came preinstalled on the PC and activation stopped after a hardware-related change, a new license may be required.
5. If the PC was pre-owned, the original key may have been used on more devices than allowed. In that case, the seller must provide the original product key, or a new product key / copy of Windows is required.
6. If none of the above works, contact customer support.

Important details from the activation guidance:

• The Activation troubleshooter for reactivation after hardware change works for a digital license and requires the Microsoft account that was linked before the change.
• For Windows 11, if the wrong edition was installed during reinstall, activation can also fail with a different error (0xC004F212), and Troubleshoot can identify that.
• A retrieved backup PID is not the same as a guaranteed usable activation key.
