name column missing in open dialogue

Question

When I open an existing file in MS word or excel, the Name column is missing. This forces me to see files in order of recently modified. In order to open a file by name I need to go to the Mac OS finder and open the file. I can not do this while in Excel or WORD.

If I understand the problem, click the Grouping button in the top of the Open dialog window & select Name. If that isn't the solution please clarify by indicating the exact steps you are taking & include a screenshot of the problematic window.

Also include the present Version Numbers of both macOS & Office.
