I am trying to receive a code on the Authenticator app to sign in to my Microsoft for school. however, I am not signed into the Authenticator app to be able to verify and enter the code I was given. When I do try to sign in my school account on the Authenticator app, it is asking me to verify a code using the same app that I need to verify signed in to use. It’s so confusing and waisting so much of my time so I can complete my orientation and sign in.

    Hi Selena,

Good day, and I appreciate the clear explanation of your concern.

This can happen when your school account requires Microsoft Authenticator for verification, but the app is not fully set up or registered on your device. As a result, you're stuck in a loop where Microsoft asks you to verify using the Authenticator app, while the app asks you to verify before you can sign in.

Because you're using a work or school account, the MFA settings are managed by your school's IT administrator. Unfortunately, this isn't something that can be reset from the user side.

I'd recommend reaching out to your school's IT administrator and explaining that you're unable to sign in because you're stuck in a Microsoft Authenticator app loop.

You can specifically ask whether they can:

    • Reset your MFA settings
    • Require MFA re-registration
    • Remove your existing Authenticator registration so you can set it up again

You may also want to share the following Microsoft article with them: Manage authentication methods for Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication - Microsoft Entra ID |… This process usually only takes a couple of minutes.

Once your IT administrator resets your MFA registration, you should be able to sign in again and go through the Microsoft Authenticator setup process from the beginning, including scanning a new QR code on your device.

If you are unsure who your IT administrator is, you can refer to this official Microsoft guide for assistance: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support.

Please note that this is a user to user support forum, and I do not have access to administrative tools or permissions to reset or modify MFA settings on your account. Because your account is managed by your school, only an authorized Microsoft 365 administrator at your institution can make these changes.

I hope this information helps point you in the right direction and allows you to regain access to your account as quickly as possible. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
