Can't edit in Word

I bought Office 2021, purchased in 2024. Suddenly today can no longer edit word docs. Word complains that I must activate Microsoft 365. I don't have a license to Microsoft 365. What should I do?

Not every version of Word is supported on every macOS build.

To help narrow down the issue:

What exact macOS version and build are you using? Go to the Apple menu > "About This Mac."

In Word, go to "Word" > "About Microsoft Word." What version and license name are shown?

When you sign in at https://account.microsoft.com/services, does Office 2021 appear under "Services & subscriptions"?

Did you purchase Office directly from Microsoft or from another retailer?

You do NOT need to subscribe to Microsoft 365. There was a bug in a recent update that has deactivated installations of Office. Please see this page from Microsoft for steps to solve the problem: Unknown Error 0x0 or License not found error in Microsoft 365 or Office running on macOS

This usually means Word is no longer seeing the Office 2021 license and has fallen into an unlicensed state, so editing and saving are disabled.

Try these steps in order:

In Word for Mac, open Word > About Microsoft Word.
- Check whether it shows Belongs to: with a Microsoft account.
- Select More Info, then Refresh License.
- When prompted, sign in with the same Microsoft account used to redeem or purchase Office 2021.
Verify the license is attached to the correct account.
- Go to Services & subscriptions and sign in with the Microsoft account used for the purchase.
- Confirm the Office product appears there.
- If it is not listed, Word is likely signed in with the wrong account.
Check whether the installed copy matches the license.
- In Word > About Microsoft Word, confirm the installed product is Office 2021 and not a Microsoft 365 install.
- A mismatch between the installed software and the license can cause the “Activate Microsoft 365 to Create and Edit” message.
If refresh does not fix it, reinstall Office from the Microsoft account subscriptions page.
- Uninstall Office for Mac.
- Restart the Mac.
- Reinstall Office from the account’s Services & subscriptions page so the correct licensed version is installed.
If the problem continues, test in a new macOS user account.
- Go to System Settings > Users & Groups.
- Sign in to the new account and test Word there.
- If it works there, the issue is likely with the current macOS user profile’s Office data.

If Word shows Unlicensed Product, Microsoft’s activation guidance also recommends signing in with the correct account and checking for multiple Office copies, since multiple installs can cause activation conflicts.
