Common causes are:

• A faulty or incompatible Office add-in
• A damaged Office installation
• File association problems, especially if double-clicking files opens the wrong app or shows an association error

Try this in order:

1. Start the app in Safe Mode to test add-ins.
   • Press Windows + R.
   • Type:
     • winword /safe for Word
     • excel /safe for Excel
     • powerpnt /safe for PowerPoint
   • If the app opens in Safe Mode, the title bar will show Safe Mode.
2. If it opens in Safe Mode, disable add-ins one at a time.
   • In the app, go to File > Options > Add-Ins.
   • In Manage, choose the app add-ins or COM Add-ins, then select Go.
   • Clear one add-in, select OK, and restart the app normally.
   • Repeat until the problem add-in is found.
   • Older add-ins known to cause problems include Abbyy FineReader, PowerWord, and Dragon Naturally Speaking.
3. If the app does not open in Safe Mode, repair Office.
   • Open Control Panel.
   • Go to Programs > Programs and Features.
   • Select the Office product.
   • Choose Change.
   • Select Quick Repair and then Repair.
4. If files do not open correctly when double-clicked, fix file associations.
   • Open Control Panel.
   • Go to Programs > Default Programs.
   • Under Set a default for a file type or link type, select the file type and assign the correct Office app.
5. If multiple Office versions are installed, uninstall the versions not needed.
   • Having multiple versions can cause files to open in the wrong version or fail to open correctly.
   • If uninstalling Office versions, restart the PC afterward.
6. As a workaround, open the Office app first, then use File > Open to open the document.
