If the password is forgotten and password change attempts are failing, use the Microsoft account recovery path in this order:
- Start with the Sign-in Helper. It checks the email address or phone number being used to sign in and identifies common account issues.
- If the password is forgotten, use Reset your password.
- If the password is known but no longer works, use the same Sign-in Helper.
- If the username or email address is not recognized, confirm the address carefully:
- Check the correct domain, such as
.com vs .co.uk
- Check for spelling differences in the email name
- Try another alias or phone number on the account if one exists
- If the account still cannot be recovered, use Recover your account and complete the verification steps:
- choose where to receive the security code
- enter the code
- set a new password
- If a message says “We couldn't find an account with that username”, contact support using the support option provided for that scenario.
- If the account has not been signed in to for more than two years, it may have been deleted and cannot be reopened.
If this issue is in the Outlook mobile app after an update, also install the latest Outlook mobile app version, because recurring password prompts can happen when app security standards change.
