Slowness and failures exporting live data from PBI Workspace to PowerPoint

2026-08-06T05:39:32.8266667+00:00

When I first attempt this. After a while I get a message "Try Again". The second time always works but it takes around 10 mins each page I export. After exporting I change it to Public Snapshot. It is not a network issue from my end, this has been confirmed by my organisation. We have the correct license as it does actually work, it is just terribly slow.

Dear @Greg Radford (Mid North Coast LHD)

As the export does eventually complete, this does not appear to be a licensing issue. The behavior you describe, where the first export attempt returns a "Try Again" message and the second attempt succeeds, suggests a performance-related issue rather than a permissions or connectivity problem.

When exporting with Embed Live Data, PowerPoint must establish a connection to the Power BI service and render the report pages live rather than exporting static images. Reports that contain large datasets, complex calculations, numerous visuals, custom visuals, or DirectQuery connections can significantly increase the time required for the export process.

    • As a next step, I recommend testing the export with a very simple report that contains only one or two basic visuals. If that report exports significantly faster, it would indicate that the delay is likely related to the complexity of the original report, such as the number of visuals, calculations, or underlying data model.
    • Moreover, I would also suggest testing the same export from a different workstation. This is not intended to validate network connectivity, but rather to help rule out any issues related to the local PowerPoint client or the Power BI add-in.
    • If the behavior remains consistent, I recommend raising a Microsoft Support ticket. Therefore, Microsoft Support can review backend service telemetry and diagnostics that are not available to your organization. This may help identify whether there is a service-side performance issue affecting the Power BI to PowerPoint live export process. For reference: Create a Fabric and Power BI support ticket
