Is this problem only affecting Excel files you download, are you able to open Excel files created and stored locally on your PC?

Please provide a screenshot of the error you see when you try to open one of the downloaded Excel files.

Right click one of the files you downloaded and select Properties.

Is there a check-box at the bottom of the properties dialog to un-block the file?

Try these checks in order:

1. Check whether the downloaded file path or name has unsupported characters If the file name or folder path contains [ ] ? < > : | or *, Excel may fail to open it. A path longer than 218 characters can also cause this.
   • In File Explorer, rename the file and remove those characters.
   • If needed, move the file to a shorter path such as Desktop or Documents and try again.
2. Check whether the file is opening as read-only or in Protected View Downloaded files can open with extra protection.
   • Right-click the file in File Explorer > Properties.
   • If Read-only is checked, clear it and select OK.
   • If the file opens in Protected View, review the Protected View settings in Office.
3. If Excel opens but only shows a blank screen Perform an Online Repair of Office.
   • Use the steps in Repair an Office application.
4. If double-clicking the file opens the wrong app or does not open correctly Reset the file association:
   • Right-click the file > Properties.
   • Next to Opens with, select Change.
   • Select Excel and enable Always use this app.
5. If the workbook may be damaged Use Excel’s repair guidance for corrupted workbooks.
6. If the issue happens only with files downloaded from portals This commonly points to downloaded-file protection or file-name/path issues. Moving the file to Documents, shortening the path, and removing unsupported characters are the fastest checks.

If Excel itself becomes unresponsive with a Grant Access prompt or shows a warning that the .xlsx format or extension is not valid, update Office to version 16.34 or later.
