My Teams account is linked to an organisation I've never worked for

I'm having real problems with my Teams account. It has become linked to an organisation I've never ever been employed by. And I can't work out how to unlink it. For a number of months, if I signed out, I could then sign back in using the same email address, and it would take me to my own Teams account. But now, I seem stuck in this other organisation. I work for myself, and so don't have an IT department to consult. Any help would be hugely appreciated!

    Hi LouAdamson

    Thank you for reaching out.

I’m sorry to hear you're experiencing this issue, especially when you're self-employed and don't have an IT department to assist. Based on your description, it sounds like your email address may be associated as a guest or external user in another Microsoft organization's tenant, and Teams is automatically signing you into that organization instead of your own account.

    Try leaving the unwanted organization:

    • Open an InPrivate/Incognito browser window.
    • Go to https://myaccount.microsoft.com/organizations
    • Sign in using the same email address you use with Teams.
    • Look for the unfamiliar organization under Organizations or Other organizations you collaborate with.
    • Select Leave organization (or Leave) next to that organization.
    • Confirm the prompt.

    For reference:

    If there's no "Leave" option:

If a Leave button is not available, or the process fails, your account may still exist as a guest account in that organization's tenant. In that case, the organization's administrator would need to remove your guest account before the association can be fully removed.

Reset Teams so it stops defaulting to that organization:

After leaving the organization, fully reset Teams sign-in state:

    On Windows:

    • Completely quit Teams from the system tray.
    • Go to Settings > Accounts > Access work or school.
    • If the unfamiliar organization appears, select it and choose Disconnect.

    • Clear the Teams cache.

For new Teams, clear the contents of:

    %userprofile%\appdata\local\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Microsoft\MSTeams

    On Mac:

    • Quit Teams.
    • Clear the Teams cache from the following folders:
    ~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.com.microsoft.teams
    ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.teams2

    • Restart Teams and sign in again.

For detailed cache-clearing instructions, see: Clear the Teams client cache - Microsoft Teams | Microsoft Learn

I hope these steps help resolve the issue and allow you to access your own Teams account again. If you run into any errors during the process or notice anything unusual, feel free to share the details and I'll be happy to help further.

Thank you for your understanding, and I wish you a wonderful day ahead.
