Remove child from family group

Question

Child account (age 15) cannot be removed from Microsoft Family. Selecting Remove says parental consent must be removed first. However, the Manage Permissions page shows no children and provides no way to remove consent. Three organizers have checked and none can see a consent record to remove.

Support also couldn't assist me: 'Since your concern is far more complex than what we had anticipated and requires the expertise of our Family Safety support team, I’d like to guide you to the Family Safety team, who are best equipped to help you further.'

Please can you sign into your Microsoft account on the family page here: https://account.microsoft.com/family/home

Once you have signed into your Microsoft account, please can you click onto the child's name and make sure activity reporting is off, and that all of the family limits have been removed for each account, in each of the tabs (Windows, Xbox, Edge & Mobile).

After you have done this, please click onto the "Settings" option on their account

Then make sure that each of the settings are set to off and click finish. This will need to be done on each of their accounts, for who you are wanting to remove from your family.

After you have done this, please open up a new tab and navigate to: https://account.xbox.com/settings

Please customize those settings to how you wish them to be when they leave the Microsoft family, then click save. Once this has been done, please try and remove them from the Microsoft family again.

If you are unable to remove the child from your Microsoft family group, this looks to be a restriction that is in place due to the region you are located in. Depending on the region you are in, if the account is classed as a child, it must be apart of a Microsoft family where parents can manage the accounts family settings.

If this is the case, you will not be able to remove the child account until the account turns 18. Instead, you would have to remove the family restrictions you wish to remove and leave them as a member on the family.

Use the adult account that originally granted consent. Being an organizer is not enough for this step.

1. Sign in to the family group at account.microsoft.com/family or https://family.microsoft.com.
2. On the child’s entry, select Manage consent or Remove consent for this child’s account.
3. After consent is removed, go back to the family group and select Remove from family group.

What applies to this case:

• Only the adult who originally granted consent can remove that consent.
• If Manage consent shows nothing, the consent was likely granted by another adult or by a different Microsoft account.
• If none of the three organizers can see a consent record, check any other adult Microsoft accounts that may have been used previously to manage the child.
• If the original consenting adult cannot access that account, the documented path is to recover the adult account first.
• If consent is removed and the child is removed from the family group, the child account should prompt for consent again the next time it signs in.

Important effects of removal:

• The removed member loses access to Family Safety features.
• The member also loses access to shared products and services from the family group, such as Microsoft 365 Family.
• Leaving or being removed from the family group does not delete the Microsoft account.
