If the Hotmail account has not been signed in to for more than two years, it may have been deleted and can no longer be reopened. Since the account was last accessed more than 4 years ago, that is the first possibility to consider.
If the account still exists, the supported recovery path is:
- Try the Sign-in Helper tool first.
- If the account is recognized, use Forgot password and follow the identity verification steps.
- If the password reset options are unavailable or no longer accessible, submit the Microsoft account recovery form.
To improve the chance of recovery form approval:
- Use a device previously used to sign in to that account.
- Complete the form from a familiar location such as home or office.
- Provide as much information as possible, even if some answers are guesses.
- Include any old passwords that may have been used.
- For Outlook.com/Hotmail.com accounts, exact email subject lines and contact details can help.
- Use a working email address to receive the recovery result.
Important limits:
- If two-step verification was turned on and none of the alternate verification methods are accessible, the account cannot be recovered through support or password reset assistance.
- Support agents cannot send password reset links or change account details.
- After submitting the recovery form, the result is sent to the working email address provided, usually within 24 hours.
- If the account is not verified, the form can be retried up to two times per day.
