Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
If Microsoft 365 Premium is still active on that PC, the apps can continue to run under the Microsoft 365 license until that subscription ends. Microsoft 365 already includes all the features in Office 2024, plus additional features, so the installed apps may still show as Microsoft 365 while that subscription is present.
To switch cleanly to Office 2024 on Windows:
- Check that Office 2024 is attached to the correct Microsoft account at
https://account.microsoft.com/services. - Remove existing Microsoft 365 or older Office installs from Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart the PC.
- Reinstall Office 2024 from the Install option for that product in the Microsoft account services page.
- Open Word or Excel and sign in with the same Microsoft account used to purchase Office 2024.
Important points:
- In most cases, different Office versions cannot run together on the same computer.
- If a newer Office suite includes apps already installed separately, the standalone app can be removed during setup.
- If Microsoft 365 remains active, the apps may continue to identify with that subscription until it expires.
- If Microsoft 365 is already owned, there is no need to buy Office 2024 to get the Office 2024 feature set.
To verify what is currently running:
- In any Office app, go to File > Account.
- On Mac, use <App Name> > About.
