I recently changed my name after marriage. I added a new email alias but something went wrong when making it primary and it told me to wait a week to try again. The option to make it primary no longer appears - can you tell me why?

    Hello

This usually happens because Microsoft temporarily limits how often the primary alias can be changed. Since you already received the “try again next week” message, the missing “Make primary” option is most likely part of that temporary restriction rather than a problem with the new alias.

Please wait a full 7 days, then sign in directly at https://account.live.com/names/manage and check whether “Make primary” appears next to your new email address.

Microsoft’s instructions for changing the primary alias are here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/add-or-remove-an-email-alias-in-outlook-com

In the meantime, I would not remove your old alias, especially if it is an @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @live.com or @msn.com address.
