How to change microsoft account from personal to work email

Good day.

I accidentally pressed the personal button for my work account instead of the work or school button. How do I change this to a work or school account? When I try to sign in but press the work account, it says that “user account is a personal micorosft account. Personal microsoft accounts are not supported for this application unless explicitly invited to an organizatio. Try signing out and signing back in with an organizational account”. How do I do this?

    Hi Abia,

Yes, it may not be a problem with your Microsoft 365 subscription itself. The important distinction is that your email address can potentially be associated with both a personal Microsoft account and a school/work account.

If your school created the Microsoft 365 account, you should normally have a school/work account managed by the school's Microsoft 365 administrator. The error you're seeing means the application is currently authenticating you as the personal Microsoft account, not the school account.

    Hi Abia,

Good day. Unfortunately a personal Microsoft account cannot simply be converted into a work or school account. Work accounts are created and managed by an organization's MS 365 administrator through Microsoft Entra ID. You can contact company's MS 365 administrator or IT dept. and ask them to confirm that the account has been created as a work or school account.

    I hope this helps.

    Regards,
    Jhun

A personal Microsoft account cannot be converted into a work or school account. They are separate account types, and there is no synchronization between them.

    To fix the sign-in issue:

    1. Sign out of the app or service where the wrong account was used.
    2. Sign in again and choose the correct work or school account.
    3. If the wrong account keeps getting reused, open a private browsing window and sign in there with the work or school account.
    4. If Windows is using the wrong connected account, go to Settings > Accounts > Access work or school and connect the correct work account.
    5. If the email address exists as both a personal account and a work account, the sign-in screen may show "Which account do you want to use?". In that case, select Work or school account.

If the email was accidentally set up as a personal Microsoft account and the app only supports organizational accounts, that personal account will not work for that application. A valid work or school account created by an organization administrator is required.

If the prompt keeps appearing because the same email address is attached to both account types, one way to reduce confusion is to rename the personal Microsoft account by changing its primary alias in Manage how you sign in.

If the work account cannot sign in or is not available, contact the organization’s IT admin.
