Switching away from GoDaddy's Microsoft 365

Our company currently uses GoDaddy for their website and Microsoft 365 subscriptions, which is just 4 people. I want to switch just my account and get 365 directly from Microsoft while the others remain with GoDaddy. My goal is just to get the desktop apps as I currently only have access to the web versions. Is this possible without having to migrate my email over as well? I can get this done by upgrading my account with GoDaddy but it's cheaper to go direct from Microsoft.

    Hello @Tim P,

I understand that you would like to use the Microsoft Office desktop applications and that your Microsoft 365 subscription is currently managed through GoDaddy.

Since you are only able to access the Office web applications, it is likely that your current subscription is Microsoft 365 Business Basic, which does not include rights to install and use the desktop versions of Office.

In this situation, you cannot purchase a separate Microsoft 365 license directly from Microsoft while your tenant is managed through GoDaddy. Any license changes or additional purchases would need to be made through GoDaddy.

To use the Office desktop applications, you can either:

    • Purchase a Microsoft 365 Apps for Business license, which provides access to the desktop Office apps, or
    • Upgrade from Microsoft 365 Business Basic to Microsoft 365 Business Standard, which includes the features of both Microsoft 365 Business Basic and Microsoft 365 Apps for Business. In many cases, Business Standard may offer better overall value depending on your country.

Alternatively, there is a possibility to purchase a Microsoft 365 Apps for Business subscription directly from Microsoft. You can try creating a new trial tenant using the following link: Microsoft 365 Apps for business | Microsoft 365

After completing and submitting the sign-up form, you will gain access to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. Once the trial period ends, you can convert the subscription to a paid plan by enabling recurring billing.

Turn recurring billing on or off for a Microsoft subscription | Microsoft Support

After obtaining the trial subscription, you can download and install the Office desktop applications and sign in with the account from the new trial tenant to verify that the Microsoft 365 Apps for Business license is assigned correctly. Once the applications are activated, you can add and switch to your primary account to use the desktop applications with your existing data.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to let me know. I would be happy to assist further.
