I paid the yearly subscription but cannot create a document on Word.

Office 2021 for Mac will no longer activate. I own a perpetual Office 2021 license. Word is version 16.56 on macOS Monterey 12.1. Microsoft AutoUpdate offers 16.78 but the update fails with "Update can't be installed at this time." I need activation support and would like to speak with an agent by phone. This has never happened before. I need it to authenticate.

You have to run at least release 16.83 of Office. See if you can download 16.83 from https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdates/update-history-office-for-mac .

You may have to update Microsoft AutoUpdate; go to https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/office-for-mac/troubleshoot-microsoft-autoupdate-in-microsoft-365-and-office-for-mac .

Which Office version do you currently have installed on your Mac, if you click Word on the main menu bar and then click About Microsoft Word?

By the way, which update failed? If you are saying that you can't update the Microsoft AutoUpdate, you don't have to. You can install the correct version of Office manually from the order history page.

Thanks for the follow-up. I am unsure which is the most recent release supported by a Office 2021 license.

If you can't get it to work, you can try an open source alternative, such as LibreOffice, instead. File compatibility is rather good (although not perfect) with Microsoft Office.

Which error message do you see?

If the problem is that Office can't be activated, ensure that you have upgraded your macOS to at least Monterey. Otherwise, Microsoft Office will refuse to run.
