Since purchasing a new computer in mid-July I am not able to edit old Office documents or create new ones. We have a Microsoft Personal 365 license for multiple computers that expires Oct. 14. It shows "unknown error code 0x0. After running the AutoUpdate as suggested on your site it says "Some apps have encountered multiple errors."

    Hii,

What version of MacOS are you using?

In this case, try uninstalling your current version of Office.

Access the App Store and check for updates; wait for the process to finish.

Access the link below and download the latest Office Mac package.

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/download-office

After installation, look for Microsoft AutoUpdate, check for any pending updates, and wait for the Office software to update and launch.

Log in with the Microsoft account that has the Office license.

    Thanks

In Microsoft AutoUpdate it doesn't give me the option to Update All or select applications to update. It proceeds but then says there is an "Update error".

For a new Mac showing Unknown error code 0x0 and Office apps that cannot edit or create files, the supported fix is:

    1. Verify macOS is version 12 or later.
    2. Close all Office apps.
    3. Open Microsoft AutoUpdate from Finder > Applications > Microsoft AutoUpdate.
      • If it is not there, check /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0/.
    4. In Microsoft AutoUpdate, select Update All or update each Office app individually.
    5. After updates finish, reopen Word or Excel and test editing.

If Office was installed from the App Store instead of microsoft.com:

    1. Close all Office apps.
    2. Open the App Store.
    3. Select Updates in the sidebar.
    4. Update Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote.
    5. Reopen the app and test again.

If AutoUpdate already reports errors and the apps still fail, the next step supported in the related guidance is to uninstall Office completely and reinstall it. Make sure the install source matches the purchase source:

    • If the subscription was obtained through Microsoft, reinstall from the Microsoft 365 account/install experience.
    • If the apps were obtained through the Apple App Store, reinstall from the App Store.

Also confirm the app is signed in with the Microsoft 365 Personal subscription account. In Microsoft 365 apps, being signed in with the wrong account can cause license update failures.

If the Mac is running an older unsupported macOS version, Office can enter reduced functionality mode, where files can be opened or printed but not edited or saved. Updating the OS first, then updating Office, is the documented resolution.
