Hey everyone, I'ver set up rules with specific words to put mail straight to my deleted instead of junk for my current email address, however I have an old account that's linked to this one and it keeps getting junk email yet there's nothing in rules for that account that I can set up rules for it to also go straight to deleted, how do I do this for an old linked hotmail account?

Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

To create email rules for Microsoft domain addresses (Such as @hotmail.com, @live.com, @msn.com, @Outlook.com),

Open an incognito/private browsing tab and sign in with your Microsoft account here -

    https://outlook.live.com/mail/0/

Go to Outlook Settings > Mail > Rules.

    Click + Add Rule,

Name the Rule and add a Condition and action.

So that the junk emails with the specific subject or words will be automatically moved to the Junk/deleted email folder.

Let me know if you still need more help.

For a linked old Hotmail/Outlook.com address, blocking and rules need to be configured for that specific mailbox in Outlook on the web. If more than one account is added, first select the old account, then set junk and rule behavior there.

    1. Open Outlook on the web.
    2. If multiple accounts are added, select the old linked account.
    3. Go to Settings > Mail > Junk email.
    4. Under Blocked senders or Blocked domains, add the sender address or domain, then Save.
      • Blocking sends future messages to Junk Email. It does not bypass directly to Deleted Items.

If the spam keeps getting through, common reasons are:

    • the sender is changing addresses
    • the visible sender is hiding the real sending address

In that case, use a rule for the old account mailbox:

    1. In Outlook on the web, open Settings > Mail > Rules.
    2. Create a rule that matches repeated patterns such as exact words in the subject/body or the sender domain.
    3. Set the action to delete or move to Deleted Items.
    4. Save the rule.

If blocked senders still appear in Inbox for that old account, check the message headers to see whether the real sender address differs from the displayed one, then block the real address instead.

    Also note:

    • In Outlook.com, blocked senders are routed to Junk Email, not fully stopped at delivery.
    • Junk email in Outlook.com is automatically removed after 14 days and cannot be recovered after that.
