I am posting this because I believe other Microsoft Office for Mac users experiencing the dreaded “Unknown error 0x0” / activation problem should know that the problem can eventually be overcome — but also because I believe Microsoft needs to look seriously at the customer-support experience surrounding this issue.
I am a long-standing Mac user and had a legitimate Office Home & Student 2021 licence. Office had previously worked perfectly on my Mac.
Then Excel suddenly required activation. When I attempted to activate it, I received:
“An unknown error has occurred. The error code is: 0x0.”
From that point, I went through Microsoft's suggested procedures, but without success. I also encountered problems with Microsoft AutoUpdate itself. Attempts to update the Microsoft software repeatedly produced messages saying that update packages could not be downloaded.
What was particularly frustrating was the difficulty of obtaining effective human assistance. I could not find a practical way of getting someone from Microsoft to take responsibility for the problem and guide me through it.
Eventually, after a lengthy process, I managed to resolve the problem myself with assistance from a technically knowledgeable adviser. The successful solution involved installing a compatible Office build manually, after first dealing with insufficient disk space and other installation issues. Office then asked me to sign in, accepted my legitimate Microsoft account, activated successfully, and — most importantly — Excel allowed me to open, edit, save and reopen an existing Excel file.
So the problem was solvable.
That is precisely why I find the experience so disappointing.
My complaint is not simply that Microsoft software developed a fault. Software faults happen. My complaint is that, while I was experiencing a known activation problem, Microsoft's published advice did not provide me with an effective route to resolution, and I was unable to obtain meaningful human assistance.
The situation was eventually resolved — but only after a prolonged process that an ordinary customer should not have had to undertake simply to regain access to a legitimately purchased Office product.
My question to Microsoft
If Microsoft knows that the 0x0 / “License Not Found” activation problem exists, why isn't there a straightforward, clearly signposted support route that takes affected legitimate customers through the actual solution?
A customer should not have to become their own Microsoft licensing technician.
An interesting comparison
The contrast with my experience of Apple Support could hardly be greater.
I have found Apple Support to be accessible, patient and practical. When I have had a problem with a Mac, I have been able to speak to a person who can guide me through the device, and where appropriate provide direct assistance.
My experience with Microsoft in this case was completely different.
I am not suggesting that Microsoft should provide exactly the same support model as Apple. I am saying that a company of Microsoft's size, whose software is relied upon by millions of people, should provide an equally effective route for a legitimate paying customer whose product suddenly stops working.
I am pleased that my own Office installation is now working again.
But I hope Microsoft will treat this experience as a warning: solving the underlying technical problem is only half the job. Providing effective customer support when something goes wrong is the other half.
I would be very interested to know whether other Mac users have experienced the same 0x0 activation problem — particularly whether Microsoft's support process actually resolved it for them.
