    Dear @Susan Merlino

Yes, you can verify the actual Microsoft Defender Antivirus status using PowerShell.

    I would start with:

    Get-MpComputerStatus

The most important properties to check are:

    Get-MpComputerStatus | Select-Object AMServiceEnabled, AntivirusEnabled, RealTimeProtectionEnabled

If these values are True, Microsoft Defender Antivirus and real-time protection are enabled.

If Defender shows as enabled there but the Dell application reports it as disabled, the issue is likely with the Dell application/status detection rather than Defender itself.

That usually means different status surfaces are reporting different things.

A green status in Windows Security generally means the device is protected. The notification/status colors are described as:

    • Green = protected
    • Yellow = potentially unprotected
    • Red = at risk

To confirm which antivirus is actually active on the Dell PC:

    1. Open Windows Security.
    2. Select Virus & threat protection.
    3. Under Who’s protecting me?, select Manage providers.
    4. Check which antivirus is listed there.

To verify Microsoft Defender Antivirus real-time protection:

    1. In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection.
    2. Select Virus & threat protection settings.
    3. Make sure Real-time protection is On.

A few important behaviors can explain the mismatch:

    • If another non-Microsoft antivirus is installed, Microsoft Defender Antivirus can automatically turn itself off or go into a reduced/passive state, while Windows still reports overall security status through Windows Security.
    • If Real-time protection is turned off manually, it normally turns back on automatically after a short delay.

For an additional check in PowerShell:

    1. Open Windows PowerShell.
    2. Run Get-MpComputerStatus.

If Manage providers shows Microsoft Defender Antivirus as the active provider and the app remains green, Defender is generally on. If it shows another antivirus product, that explains why another message says Microsoft Defender Antivirus is not on.
