Missing files and prompted to 'connect to OneDrive Personal'

Hello,

I previously had all my files synced to OneDrive, which I last used in 2024. I recently renewed my subscription. However, when I try to open my synced files on my PC, it prompts me to 'connect to OneDrive Personal'.

Furthermore, when I log into OneDrive online, it is completely empty and all my files are missing.

Could you please help me investigate this account-specific issue and recover my missing files?

And also I don't see the OneDrive cloud icon on my computer.

Thank you.

    Hello

There is a key detail I would need your help clarifying.

You said you last used it in 2024 and recently renewed. Does that mean between 2024 and renewal time, you were not on any subscription? If so, if you used more than 5 GB of OneDrive storage during this gap time, your data is permanently deleted at this point.

    See Microsoft's explanation here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/onedrive/microsoft-storage-quotas

So, it is important to understand how long the gap had been since the plan expired and your recent renewal.

    Hi @민선 김

Make sure you are signed in with the correct OneDrive account.

And also press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, go to Startup apps and make sure OneDrive is enabled.

There's also an official document if you want to restore your OneDrive (Recommended to do the steps above) with this link: https://support.microsoft.com/en-US/onedrive/restore-your-onedrive

    Best regards,
    Nanta

Use this order to investigate and recover the files:

    1. Confirm the correct Microsoft account Files may be in a different OneDrive account than the one tied to the renewed subscription. Sign out of OneDrive online and sign in again with any other Microsoft account previously used on that PC. This is especially important if the files were last used in 2024.
    2. Search on the OneDrive website first Sign in to OneDrive on the web and use Search everything at the top. Search by:
      • exact filename
      • partial filename
      • descriptions
      • dates
      • places
Files in Personal Vault do not appear in search results.
    3. Check the OneDrive Recycle bin On the left side of the OneDrive website, open Recycle bin and restore anything found.
    4. Check Personal Vault Missing files may be there even if search shows nothing. In the recycle bin area, select Show Personal Vault items to unlock and view them if needed.
    5. Check local storage on the PC If the files were not fully synced to the cloud, they may still be on the device. Use File Explorer to search the computer, and also check the PC Recycle Bin.
    6. If many files disappeared at once, restore the whole OneDrive If a Microsoft 365 subscription is active, the entire OneDrive can be restored to an earlier point within the last 30 days using Restore your OneDrive. Caution: files or folders created after the restore point are moved to the OneDrive Recycle Bin.
    7. About the “connect to OneDrive Personal” prompt That prompt usually indicates the PC is not currently connected to the personal OneDrive account that originally synced those files. Since the OneDrive cloud icon is also missing, the OneDrive app may not be running or connected, so the web checks above are the best first step to determine whether the files still exist in the cloud.
    8. If nothing is found online For personal OneDrive, support agents cannot access files and cannot provide more help than the published recovery guidance. If the files are not found by searching OneDrive, checking Recycle Bin, checking Personal Vault, checking another Microsoft account, and checking local device storage, keep trying alternate filename spellings, descriptions, and locations.

A practical recovery path for this case is:

    • check whether the wrong Microsoft account is signed in
    • search OneDrive web
    • check Recycle bin
    • check Personal Vault
    • search the PC with File Explorer
    • if the loss was recent and widespread, use Restore your OneDrive within 30 days
