I want to use a feature of MS called "Picture Format > Compress Pictures" to resize .JPG files.
How can I access that feature?

Thanks for your help,

    Hi,

    1. Open Word and insert the .JPG file: Insert → Pictures → This Device.
    2. Click the picture once. A Picture Format tab will appear on the ribbon.
    3. Select Picture Format → Compress Pictures.
    4. Choose the desired resolution, such as E-mail (96 ppi) or Web (150 ppi), and click OK

Compress Pictures is available in the desktop Office apps, not in Microsoft 365 for the web.

To access it in Word on Windows:

    1. Open the document in Word desktop.
    2. Insert the .JPG into the document, or select a picture already in the document.
    3. Select the picture.
    4. Go to the Picture Format tab.
    5. In the Adjust group, select Compress Pictures.
      • If the ribbon is narrow, the button may appear as an icon without a label.
    6. Choose whether to apply compression only to the selected picture.
    7. Under Resolution, choose the resolution needed, then select OK.

    Important details:

    • This feature compresses pictures in a document. It is not described as a standalone JPG file resizer.
    • If the Picture Format tab does not appear, the picture is not selected. Double-click the picture if needed.
    • The default picture resolution in Office is 220 ppi.
    • Compression can reduce image detail.

If the goal is to reduce the size of the original image file itself, one supported method is:

    1. Insert the JPG into Word.
    2. Use Picture Format > Compress Pictures.
    3. Save the document.

For older Picture Manager guidance, the path is similar:

    1. Select the picture.
    2. Click Picture Tools Format.
    3. Click Compress Pictures.
    4. Choose Print, Web, or E-mail.
    5. Click OK, then save the compressed picture.
