Migrate on-prem NetApp to Azure NetApp

We have on-premise netapp file storage (50TB) and plan to migrate to Azure.

Can i migrate this to Azure NetApp now ?

What are the steps to migrate from on-prem NetApp to Azure Netapp.

More than 100 users are accessing to this on-premise netapp from their workstations via network shared

You will likely want to use Cloud Sync or XCP to migrate. Here is a great blog post which highlights the differences between the two as well as steps that can be taken to migrate.

Alternatively you can also use a wide array of free tools to copy data. For NFS, you can use workloads tools such as rsync to copy and synchronize source data into an Azure NetApp Files volume. For SMB, you can use workloads robocopy in the same manner. These tools can also replicate file or folder permissions. Comparison of these is available here.

If you have questions specific to Cloud Sync or XCP I recommend posting them on the NetApp Community Forum.

Hope this helps! Let us know if you have further questions or need more assistance.

Hi @deherman-MSFT ,All

Thanks for your reply.

Since it was around 50 TB of data , that need to be moved to Azure Netapp, from on-prem NetApp ... i was thinking it is better to use Azure Data Box to send to Azure , since Cloud Sync or XCP will take a very long time to copy.(even with ExpressRoute setup between Azure and on-premises). Please comment on this.

i understand Azure NetApp uses similar or same underlying hardware as on-prem Netapp

Also since i am migrating from on-prem NetApp to Azure Netapp , there should be relatively straight forward or easy way to make this movement/migration. .

Data Box does not currently support migration to Azure NetApp Files. The only available options are online transfers currently. Completion time would depend on your available bandwidth.

I believe that using Cloud Sync would be the easiest option for you. You can review the quickstart documentation to get started.

Let me know if you have further questions.

Hi @deherman-MSFT

The Cloud Sync option is over internet i think.

We have a express route connectivity built between azure and on-prem . So we want our data transfer/migration to happen over the express route , mainly because we get speedy connection via express route .

We dont want a hybrid connection going over internet , for data migration/sync to Azure.

1) Please confirm if Cloud Sync can be done over express Route connection or should we go for XCP ?

2) What about SnapMirror and SnapVault to migrate NetApp to Azure NetApp ?
