    Hello C. Matthew Peterson

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum. First, please feel free to check out AI answer

To help narrow this down, are you using the Microsoft Outlook app or Apple’s built-in Mail app, and is the address an Outlook.com/Hotmail account or a Microsoft 365 work account?

Please also sign in through Outlook on the web and try sending a test message. If webmail works, the mailbox itself is working and the problem is limited to the iPhone app.

If you are using the Outlook app, open Outlook > profile icon > Settings > select the account > Reset Account.

Please share any exact error message shown, you can send them here with your personal information removed or send it to Private Message that I have opened.

Try these fixes in order on the iPhone:

    1. Re-enter the account password in Apple Mail
      • Open Settings on the iPhone.
      • Go to Mail > Accounts.
      • Tap the Outlook/Hotmail account.
      • Tap Account Settings or the Password field.
      • Enter the correct password.
      • Tap Done.
      • Open the Mail app and check whether mail now sends and receives.
    2. Check whether Calendar and Contacts sync options are enabled
      • Go to Settings > Accounts & Passwords and select the account.
      • If using iOS 10, go to Settings > Mail > Accounts.
      • Make sure Calendars and Contacts are enabled.
    3. If the account was added as IMAP, delete it and add it back as Exchange
      • If there is no calendar option for the account, it may have been added as IMAP.
      • Delete the account.
      • Add it again and choose Exchange.
      • IMAP/POP accounts sync email only, not calendar or contacts.
    4. If this is Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live, or MSN, check service status
      • If the account was working elsewhere and only the iPhone is failing, there may be a current Outlook.com service issue.
      • Check the Outlook.com service status and try again later if there is an active issue.
    5. If using Outlook for iOS instead of Apple Mail
      • For setup, sync, or other app issues, use the in-app support option from Outlook for iOS.

If the account is brand new and Outlook.com mail cannot be sent yet, make sure the account verification email was completed. Sending can be blocked until the account is verified.
