Word 365 Read Aloud Natural Voices Not Available

Hello,

I'm unable to read aloud any word documents using natural voices.

Does anyone have a fix to correct the problem issue?

Hi,

This appears to be a recurring bug that comes back with each update affecting some users. The solution mentioned in this thread still seems to work for some users. You can give it a try and see if it resolves the issue for you.

Hi @Dan Gott

The natural “neural” voices in Word 365 Read Aloud are currently missing due to a known regression introduced in the April 2026 update. The fix involves resetting Word’s voice configuration via the Windows Registry and ensuring you’re signed in with a Microsoft 365 account and connected to the internet.

Try these steps:

• Make sure your correctly signed in with your Microsoft 365 account.
• Make sure your connected to the internet.
• Close all office apps, restart your PC, then reopen work and test Read Aloud.
• Go to Control Panel > Programs > Microsoft 365 > Change > Online Repair

There is another which is registry tweaks, but I highly don't recommend doing it if you're not comfortable. But if your comfortable, here it is:

• Press Win + R, type in regedit
• Make your way to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\version\Word\Options (Note: Do not copy paste this into the path, because version varies by your office version, instead make your way through the folders.
• Look for values called Speak, or SpeakVoice.
• Example if you see Speak or SpeakVoice, right click and rename (e.g., SpeakVoice-old ).
• Restart Word and test again.

This should force Word to rebuild, if things don't go exactly as planned, go to the same registry and if you don't see a new Speak or SpeakVoice value, rename the SpeakVoice-old value to 'SpeakVoice' back.
