2026-08-18T18:54:37.8733333+00:00 A half-black camera image commonly points to a physical privacy shutter or camera cover that is partially blocking the lens.
Try these steps in order:
- Check the camera lens area closely Look for a small slider, shutter, or cover next to the webcam and make sure it is fully open. A partially closed shutter can block part of the image.
- Check for a camera privacy key or switch Many laptops have a keyboard key or hardware switch that enables or disables the camera privacy mode. If present, toggle it once and test the camera again.
- Turn off any manufacturer privacy mode If the camera preview shows a gray screen, lock icon, or privacy screen, open the shutter, press the camera privacy key, or disable privacy mode in the manufacturer app.
- Verify Windows camera access Go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Camera and make sure Camera access and Let apps access your camera are both On.
- Run the automated camera troubleshooter Open the Get Help app and run the camera troubleshooter.
- If the camera is intermittent or not detected, try Basic camera driver mode
- Open Settings in Windows.
- Go to the camera settings for the device.
- Open Advanced camera options.
- Enable Basic camera driver mode.
- Restart the camera app or Teams and test again.
- If this is a Surface device, check updates in the Surface app In the Surface app, expand Help & support, check update status, and install any available updates.
- If the problem remains, restart the device On Surface, a full shutdown and restart is recommended. If needed, press and hold the power button for 20 seconds to force a restart.
Important detail: on devices with a physical shutter, the camera can still appear to work normally in Windows even when the shutter is closed, but the image may be black or very dark.
If the shutter is physically jammed or stuck halfway, that points to a hardware issue rather than a Windows setting.
