I can't open the applications because I have a Windows license. I can't access Word, PowerPoint, Excel, or other applications. I need to do a task in Word, and it says there's a problem opening Word. What's wrong? Why can't I?

Why can't I open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint? I don't know why, even though my license is valid. It says there's a problem. What is it? I need to do my homework in Word, and now I can't access these applications. Please, can you help me as soon as possible? Thank you.

Please confirm that you’ve actually purchased Microsoft 365.

If you haven’t done that then that’s why you can’t open the apps

    See here to buy:-

    Hi Ellis,

Based on your sharing, if you're having a valid license for Office desktop apps but the apps are not working, there maybe a problem with the Office installation itself. Therefore, I suggest you can first try repairing your Office to see if it helps:

    • Close all Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
    • Open Settings (or press Windows + I) > go to Apps > Installed apps.
    • Find your Microsoft 365/Office package in the list (Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2019, Microsoft Apps for Enterprise, etc.)> select the three dots (…) next to it and choose Edit.
    • If prompted by User Account Control, select Yes.
    • Run Quick Repair first. If the problem persists, run Online Repair later.

For your reference: Repair an Office application | Microsoft Support

Note: if you're using Windows 10, there is no three dots option. In that case, you need to select the Microsoft 365/Office installation directly then select Repair.

In the meantime, for the best possible assistance, can you share more details about your situation? I greatly appreciate your cooperation and understanding.

    • What is the Microsoft license you're currently using?
    • What is the exact error message you see when try using the Office apps? ("Unlicensed Product", "Office has run into a problem", etc.)

Once again, thank you for your cooperation and understanding. Hope to hear from you soon.

A valid Windows license does not guarantee that Office apps will open. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint can fail to open for several common Office-specific reasons:

    1. Office is not fully updated
      • Open any Office app if possible, then go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
      • If Update Now is not visible, select Enable Updates first.
    2. A faulty add-in is blocking startup
      • Open Run from Windows search.
      • Start the app in Safe Mode:
        • winword.exe /safe
        • excel.exe /safe
        • powerpnt.exe /safe
      • If the app opens in Safe Mode, disable add-ins:
        • Go to File > Options > Add-ins.
        • In Manage, select COM Add-ins, then choose Go.
        • Clear the add-ins one at a time and test again.
      • Older versions of ABBYY FineReader and Dragon Naturally Speaking are specifically called out as known causes with Office 2016.
    3. Office installation is damaged
      • Repair Office:
        • Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
        • Select the Office product.
        • Choose Change.
        • Start with Quick Repair.
        • If that does not fix it, use Online Repair.
    4. Windows or device drivers are outdated
      • On Windows 11: Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
      • On Windows 10: Start > Settings > Update & security > Windows Update > Check online for updates from Microsoft Update.
    5. Office is busy updating, repairing, or uninstalling
      • If the message says Office is busy or Unable to start Office, wait a few minutes and try again.
      • Then restart the PC and try again.
      • If it still fails, use the Office uninstall troubleshooter to completely remove Office, then reinstall it. Note: this troubleshooter cannot uninstall Office 2024 and requires Windows 10 or later.
    6. Office activation issue, even if Windows is licensed
      • A Windows license is separate from Office activation.
      • If Office shows Unlicensed Product or activation errors, sign in with the account used to buy or activate Office, check for multiple Office installs, and verify the subscription status.

If immediate recovery is needed, the best supported order is:

    1. Restart the PC.
    2. Check Windows Update.
    3. Repair Office with Online Repair if Quick Repair already failed.
    4. Try Word in Safe Mode with winword.exe /safe.
    5. If Word opens, disable COM add-ins.
    6. If nothing opens, uninstall and reinstall Office.
