I have three email addresses associated with my Microsoft identity. The address currently shown as my primary sign-in/administrator address is the one I want to discontinue. I need to make [the address you want to keep] my primary sign-in address while preserving access to Windows, OneDrive, Outlook, subscriptions, and any administrator rights. Please confirm whether these addresses are aliases of one personal Microsoft account or separate Microsoft 365/Windows accounts, and identify the safe steps before I remove the old address. I am afraid to remove the old address without validation that it will not cause problems for me.

It can take 24-48 hours for the sync to happen.

Or you can manually force it this way:

Go to Settings > Accounts > Your info

Click on Sign in with local user instead. follow the steps and finish the rest.

(If you don't see the "sign in with a local account instead option, click on "Stop signing into Microsoft apps automatically" first, then relaunch this page. )

Restart the computer (Do Not skip)

Go to Settings > Accounts > Your info

Click on Sign in with Microsoft account instead. follow the steps and finish the rest. Use the new alias this time to sign in.

Restart the computer (Do Not skip)

******@protonmail.com is finally listed as my primary microsoft account. However, when I click on my taskbar settings, the name and logo that appear in the upper left hand corner are ******@yahoo.com. I really don't plan on using that email ny further and want to get rid of it. How do I make the email that appears on taskbar settings change over to my new primary - ******@protonmail.com?

If the three addresses are aliases on one personal Microsoft account, they share the same contacts, OneDrive storage, subscriptions, and account settings, and all aliases use the same password. In that case, changing which alias is primary is the safe path before removing the old address.

What can be confirmed from the account behavior:

    • If the addresses appear under Your info / Manage how you sign in to Microsoft for the same sign-in, they are aliases of one personal Microsoft account.
    • If one address is a personal Microsoft account and another is a Microsoft 365 work or school account, they are separate accounts and cannot be merged.

Safe sequence to follow for a personal Microsoft account:

    1. Sign in to Edit account info at https://account.live.com/names/manage.
    2. Check whether the address to keep is already listed there.
    3. If it is not listed, choose Add email and add it first.
    4. If the address shows as unverified, go to Manage how you sign in to Microsoft at https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=529489, select Verify next to that alias, then select Send email and complete the verification from the message sent to that address.
    5. After the address to keep is added and verified, make it the primary sign-in alias.
    6. Only after that, remove the old address if it is no longer needed.

Important points before removing the old address:

    • Verification codes sent by email can only be sent to the primary alias or another email added as a sign-in verification method.
    • All aliases on the same personal Microsoft account continue to use the same underlying account data, including subscriptions and settings.
    • By default, all aliases can sign in, but sign-in can be restricted per alias in Your info > Sign-in preferences.

If the old address has been blocked for sign-in, the sign-in error can be bypassed by using another alias on the same account that is still allowed for sign-in.

    For live help:

    • If sign-in is the blocker, use the Sign-in helper.
    • For technical support, use Contact Microsoft Support.
    • Support agents cannot send password reset links or access and change account details.
