Language bar disappeared and dock to taskbar is grayed out

I have two languages enabled on my Windows 11 laptop. I used to see the language bar on the taskbar and could use it to switch between languages, but it has now disappeared.

In Settings, I unchecked “Use the desktop language bar when it’s available.” However, under Language Bar Options, “Floating on Desktop” is selected. The other choices are “Hidden” and “Docked in the taskbar,” but “Docked in the taskbar”—the option I want—is grayed out. I also cannot deselect “Floating on Desktop” unless I select “Hidden.”

Please send me very clear, step by step instructions about how to reenable the language bar.

    Hi Aviva Wasser

Thanks for confirming those steps did not help.

A few questions that may help narrow this down:

    1. Does Windows + Spacebar still switch between your installed languages, even though the language indicator is missing?
    2. Which Windows 11 version and OS build are you running? (Settings > System > About)
    3. Does the issue occur only in your current Windows account, or does the language indicator appear normally in a newly created local user account? Microsoft Q&A reports of similar behavior have sometimes been isolated to a specific user profile.
    4. Have you recently installed any Windows updates or language packs before the problem started?

Also, please confirm whether you have more than one keyboard layout installed, not just more than one language listed under Preferred languages. Windows should normally show the input indicator when multiple keyboard layouts are available.

The answers to these questions can help determine whether this is a configuration issue, a profile-specific problem, or a Windows issue requiring further troubleshooting.

It still did not work. Do I need to restart my laptop? What do I do with the choice - Show additional language icons in the task bar.

Because two languages are already enabled, the missing indicator is usually caused by the language bar being set to float or hide instead of showing in the taskbar.

Follow these steps in Windows 11:

    1. Open Settings.
    2. Go to Time & language.
    3. Select Typing.
    4. Select Advanced keyboard settings.
    5. Clear Use the desktop language bar when it’s available.

That setting is important here: when it is enabled, Windows uses the desktop language bar, which can appear as a floating bar instead of a taskbar indicator.

If the language bar is still floating or missing, do this next:

    1. In Advanced keyboard settings, select Language bar options.
    2. If Floating On Desktop is selected and Docked in the taskbar is unavailable, select Hidden.
    3. Click OK.
    4. Go back to Advanced keyboard settings and make sure Use the desktop language bar when it’s available is still unchecked.

Expected result: with the desktop language bar disabled, Windows should use the language indicator in the taskbar instead of the floating desktop bar.

If the language indicator still does not appear, verify that Windows still has more than one keyboard layout available:

    1. Open Start > Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
    2. Under Preferred languages, confirm that at least two input languages or keyboard layouts are installed.

Once more than one keyboard layout is enabled, the language indicator should appear automatically near the clock on the taskbar.

To switch languages after it returns:

    • Click the language icon on the taskbar and choose the language.
    • Or press Alt+Shift to switch between keyboard layouts.
